DIY Non-Toxic Hand Sanitizer
Today Tobias and I did a fun DIY project that I’m excited to use and excited to share! A home-made, natural, non-toxic hand sanitizer!
Recently, after seeing some of the harsh ingredients that we put on our skin and use to clean our home, I decided to make the effort to find better alternatives for my family!
I’ve never been the type to carry around hand sanitizer, but now that I have a little boy who touches everything and then puts his hands in his mouth, there have been times I wished I WAS that type of mom who had it and was ready at a moments notice! However, there has also been a side of me that hesitated because I was unsure if I liked the idea of certain ingredients on his tiny hands. “Is it safe for his skin?” Apparently, the FDA has been asking the same question. See article here.
This led me to essential oils! I have been amazed and intrigued by the vast amount of uses and benefits that these oils possess. I bought my first kit and have since been learning how to use them!
Today we used doTERRA On Guard which is the perfect oil for our natural hand sanitizer because of it’s support for healthy immune function and cleansing properties! (edit: I now use Young Living‘s Thieves oil blend which is very similar with the same benefits!)

SUPPLIES:
- 1 oz. Spray bottle
- 20 drops On Guard or Thieves essential oil
- 1 Tbs Aloe Vera gel
- water
DIRECTIONS:
- In a bowl or measuring cup, mix aloe vera gel and On Guard oil
- Spoon into spray bottle (we did not have a funnel, but that would have made it much easier)
- Fill the remainder of the bottle with water
- Shake well!
It was so easy and fun to put together! Despite his face in the pictures, Tobias thoroughly enjoys helping whether it be cooking, cleaning, unfolding the laundry π etc. and was mesmerized by our little project!
Both Tobias and I tried our new sanitizer and I must say, I loved it! I love everything from the smell to the knowledge that everything in this container was safe and good for our skin! I noticed that it left my hands feeling soft and hydrated and the aroma of cinnamon, clove, wild orange, and other oils that make up On Guard lingered on my hands for quite a while after applying it!
Is this sanitizer something you would carry in your purse or diaper bag?
Let me know your thoughts if you try it! π
